Severe Weather Threatens Northern and Central Vietnam: Prepare for Flooding and Landslides

Fresh climate from the north

Overview of Recent Rainfall and Saturation Levels

Several provinces in northern and central Vietnam are facing an elevated risk of natural disasters due to recent heavy rainfall. Over the past six hours, from 11 PM on May 10th to 5 AM on May 11th, areas within Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Thanh Hoa, and Nghe An provinces have experienced moderate to very intense rainfall.Specific precipitation measurements include 124.8 mm in Chieng Ngam, 89.8 mm in Hang Lia,158 mm in So thanh (Thanh hoa),and 161.4 mm in Tang Thanh (Nghe An).

soil moisture models indicate that saturation levels in many of these regions are at or near critical levels, exceeding 85%.This saturation considerably increases the potential for sudden floods and landslides, particularly in mountainous terrains and along rivers and streams.

The National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecast is strongly advising residents to stay informed about weather updates and take proactive measures to mitigate the impact of potential natural disasters. Special attention should be given to areas prone to flash floods and landslides.
