Easyjet Flight Diverted, passengers stranded for 23 Hours After Medical Emergency

More then 150 Easyjet passengers experienced a grueling 23-hour delay after their flight from Mallorca, Spain, to John Lennon Liverpool Airport was diverted due to a medical emergency.

The Easyjet flight 3362, which departed from Mallorca on Tuesday, encountered a medical emergency involving a male passenger, suspected of suffering a stroke. The pilot rerouted the aircraft to Bordeaux, France, a detour of approximately 150 miles, where it landed safely about half an hour later.

Upon arrival in Bordeaux, medical personnel attended to the passenger, who was later deemed fit to fly after evaluation at a local hospital.

However, the ordeal didn’t end there. Due to the late hour, the crew’s legally mandated working hours had expired, and refueling options were limited. As a result, the flight was unable to continue from Bordeaux.

“Captain announced that the crew working hours had run out and because there was no fuel available, everyone had to go down and take back luggage, then wait for land staff with hotel accommodation instructions,” said one passenger, edward Watkins.

Passengers reported a lengthy wait for assistance from Easyjet representatives, a claim the airline disputes, stating that staff were present upon arrival.

“The representative told us that a hotel had been prepared 50 minutes away and the bus woudl be provided. one bus arrived, no more came. Easyjet representatives then said passengers could take a taxi and claim the cost of returning from Easyjet, where a taxi rate was at least 160 euros,” said Beber Watkins.

Hotel Chaos and Further Delays

The situation worsened as passengers who managed to reach the designated hotel, the Relais De Margaux Hotel and Spa, found that only 53 rooms had been reserved, far fewer than needed. Many passengers, including Edward Watkins, were forced to spend the night at the airport, receiving a food voucher worth 27 euros.

“Captain announced that the crew working hours had run out…everyone had to go down and take back luggage.”

The rescheduled flight was set for 18:40 on Wednesday, but passengers faced further delays. They received an additional voucher of 18 euros while waiting at the airport. The flight, with a new crew, eventually took off after 21:00 local time, more than two hours behind schedule.

The plane finally landed in Liverpool just before 22:00, marking a 23-hour delay from the original departure time. The original flight crew traveled as passengers on the delayed flight, along with the passenger whose medical condition prompted the diversion.

Easyjet’s Response

“Ezy3362 flights from Palma (Mallorca) to Liverpool on June 3 must be diverted to Bordeaux because a customer needs urgent medical assistance, which causes the crew to reach the operating hours limits regulated for safety and flights are delayed all night,” said Easyjet spokesman.

The Easyjet spokesman added, “the safety and welfare of our customers and the crew is Easyjet’s highest priority and we do everything we can to minimize the impact of the transfer. We always try to provide hotel, food, and transportation accommodation if needed, and while our team at the airport works hard to manage it for most customers, as of limited availability, we also advise customers who are looking for their own accommodations that they will be replaced.”
