Minor Earthquake Shakes Campi Flegrei Area Near Naples

A magnitude 2.9 earthquake struck the province of Naples in the Campi Flegrei area at 3:30 AM local time. The epicenter was located two kilometers from Pozzuoli.

According to data from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Ingv), the earthquake’s hypocenter was only three kilometers deep. Authorities report no damage to people or property. The same area experienced two earthquakes of magnitude 3.6 and 3.7 three days prior.

The earthquake had a hypocenter just three kilometers of depth and epicenter two km from Pozzuoli.

Campi Flegrei: A Volcanic Region

The Campi Flegrei area, where the earthquake occurred, is a large volcanic area situated west of Naples, Italy. This region is characterized by a caldera, a large cauldron-like hollow that forms after the collapse of a volcano following a major eruption. The area is known for its geothermal activity, including fumaroles (steam vents) and mud pools.
