English actress Prunella Scales, who was remembered by the audience as the unforgettable and domineering Sybil Fawlty in the British comedy “Fawlty Towers“, has passed away at the age of 93. Her talent and flamboyant portrayal have won hearts over the years, making her a British television icon.
Forever with love
Prunella Scales’ sons Samuel and Joseph have said that their beloved mother passed away peacefully at her home in London. “Although dementia forced her to end her nearly 70-year distinguished career as an actress, she continued to live in her home,” her sons said in a statement. They added that Scales had watched an episode of “Fawlty Towers” the day before she left, showing a deep connection with her most famous role. The actress passed away peacefully, spending her last phase of life in comfort, contentment and surrounded by love.
Life path and career
Prunella Scales was born on 22 June 1932 in Sussex. Her mother was an actress who graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, which probably also influenced Prunella’s career choice. Skala’s career started in 1951 as a theater assistant, but her ambition was to be an actress. She quickly landed roles in film, including an early, now-lost film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice (1952). A turning point in her career came in the early 1960s, when she landed the lead role in the TV sitcom “Marriage Lines” alongside Richard Briers. However, she was best known for her role as Sybil Fawlty, the bossy wife of Basil Fawlty (John Cleese), in the cult TV series “Fawlty Towers” (1975-1979). She became an icon by portraying a restrained but strong personality with brilliant hairstyles and a sharp tongue.
Scales’ talent was recognized with a BAFTA nomination in 1991 for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett’s A Question of Attribution. She was also nominated twice for the Laurence Olivier Award. In addition to her acting career, Scales, together with her husband, also actor Timothy West, won the hearts of viewers with the series of canal exploration programs “Great Canal Journeys” on Channel 4 (2014-2019). The episode also revealed Scales’s deteriorating health, including hearing loss.
Last years of life and legacy
Prunella Scales and Timothy West were married for 61 years. West passed away in November 2024. Scales is survived by two sons, one daughter-in-law, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her contribution to British television and cinema is immeasurable, leaving a vivid memory of a brilliant actress whose creative legacy will live on forever.
