Shane Egan, a 33-year-old train driver from Ballinasloe, Co Galway, was away playing football with his oldest son when he received a text from his wife Emma. She described hearing a massive crash and feeling her home shake. Emma texted Shane again at dawn, warning him of her fears.

The couple’s home, with its doors swinging and wardrobes moving, seemed to be in chaos. Emma mentioned that despite the tumult, she could not venture outside due to safety concerns.

The next morning, a neighbor informed Emma her house was “falling down.” Upon inspection, Emma found a pile of bricks and slates on the ground. The gable end of their home had caved in during the night.

Shane Egan, who arrived home at 11 PM on Friday, expressed his gratitude for the collapse’s direction, stating he and his family would have been trapped under the rubble if it had fallen in another manner.

Community Support in Ballinasloe

Shane Egan was heartened by a wave of support from the Ballinasloe community. Friends and locals have assisted in making the property safe ahead of Storm Herminia, forecasted to hit Ireland and the UK on Sunday.

A GoFundMe page set up by a friend raised over €9,000 to help cover materials, tools, and reconstruction costs.

Johanna Krijnsen, a 34-year-old mother of four from Lisdonvarna, Co Clare, recounted how parts of her roof were ripped off in the storm. Johanna, originally from Utrecht, Netherlands, shared the devastation affecting her family.

Approximately 10 trees on her land were uprooted, and one of her polytunnels folded in half. She and her family were still without power.

Johanna’s husband attempted to repair the roof temporarily with plastic and old tiles, awaiting a professional roofer to make permanent repairs. Their polytunnel, which is crucial for her children’s learning and development, was severely damaged.

Thinking about her children, particularly her eldest daughter with Down’s Syndrome and her eldest son with non-verbal autism, Johanna mentioned that the disruption and power cuts affect their平静 emotionally.

Financial Support Initiatives

Both families turned to online fundraising to support their rebuilding efforts.

Shane’s GoFundMe page brought in over €9,000, and Johanna created her own page to restore her roof and polytunnel.
