Comment from award winner Erna Mayasari

I am proud to be a member of the team of Naoto Matsueda, Akira Fukugakiuchi, Erni Johan and Matsueda.

We have succeeded in obtaining nanofibers from the stems of the banana family Musca by one-step alkaline extraction. The nanofibers contain 71% cellulose I and have a minimum fiber diameter of 3.8 nm and a high aspect ratio, indicating that banana stems are an inexpensive source of cellulose nanofibers. Indonesia is the world’s third largest producer of bananas, producing more than 7 million tons per year. In the future, we plan to develop this research, which is currently being conducted in Japan, into research using many Indonesian varieties.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my advisor, Professor Matsueda, Dean of the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Hiroki Ohgami, and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for their support.
