Young hunters must start with the right weapon for them

Finding the right weapon for a young hunter is a critical step to increase overall participation in hunting seasons in the Upper Midwest.

The choice of a gun with the right size, low recoil and high impact will make the experience a lasting draw to the outside.

Mike Ahlman of Ahlman's Gun Shop in Morristown, Minnesota, said a Daisy Red Ryder is child's play for kids excited about shooting targets. The .22 rifle is a second common rifle, but the choices expand when a young man is received in the annual collection of deer.

"A .243 [rifle] that's what we all use, "said Ahlman." My name is Minnesota. "

The .243 is a light projectile on the recoil but powerful enough to shoot down a deer. It is precise enough to use on more shiftier targets, and is a cartridge supported by a selection of youthful stock and barrels.

The combination of less kick, an attainable trigger and something light enough to aim build confidence. The abrupt recoil could be the worst disaster, said Ahlman.

"If they are about to startle, they will lose," said Ahlman.

But for deer hunting, keep parents away from buying weapons with even less calcium, like the shotgun .223. Too many animals end up wounded. "A .243 is a minimum of bare roots for me," said Ahlman.

He said some young hunters start with .308. "You kick a little bit more, but it's not bad," he said.

Steve Dreifuerst, vice president of sports products at Fleet Farm, agreed that the compact rifles, 243, are a top-level hunting gun. Fleet Farm carries several models expressly made for the age group, he said.

"We always want to defend young people introduced into firearms … let them enlist in the safety of hunters," Dreifuerst said.

Safes for the protection of ears, goggles and internal guns are essential, he said.

Kevin Lunzer, head of the arms store at Joe's Sporting Goods in St. Paul, said the 7mm-08 ammunition is another popular choice for young hunters. It is a 284 caliber bullet in a .308 case that shoots flat and combines power with a reduced recoil.

The rifles built for the 7mm-08 cartridges are commonly used by hunters on both sides of the age spectrum, Lunzer said. Even older hunters prefer ammo to avoid rolling heavier blows.

Lunzer said that new-hunting children often want a semi-automatic shotgun, capable of giving them a second or third blow to pulling a finger. But bolt-action is the way to go because it requires accuracy. Secondly, semi-automatic rifles and shotguns are recharged even when no second shot is required.

"Let's say the animal goes down and you get excited and now you're running over it," said Lunzer, a firearm safety instructor. "You probably took your security, but you're still running with a loaded gun."

If a family simply hunts in a bullet zone only for shotguns, all three experts recommend 20 gauge. They split more than juvenile caliber rifles, but they are also good for hunting wild turkeys, waterfowl, pheasants, cocks and other game.
