“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” could have been a totally different movie.
A Redditors fan nucleus somehow dug up the original script and transcribed the preliminary draft for “Episode IX” months before the movie hit theaters, Esquire reports.
The breakdown, which was published in r / StarWarsLeaks Subreddit on Monday, disclosed details of the manuscript of the original director and duo of writers, Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, who have not yet confirmed their veracity. The first big difference? According to reports, it was titled “Duel of Destinations,” rather than “The Rise of Skywalker.”
“The iron grip of the FIRST ORDER has been extended to the farthest reaches of the galaxy,” the opening text said, according to Reddit’s post. “Only a few scattered planets remain unoccupied. Treacherous acts are punishable by death.
The transcript also included other new frames and omissions. On the one hand, Trevorrow and Connolly’s version completely discards the telephone revelation of Emperor Palpatine (and his inheritance shared with King), instead of focusing on Rey, Kylo Ren and the other main characters in the franchise.
“Duel of the Fates” also has Kylo Ren and Rey struggling to reach a truce between the Jedi and Sith factions at war, a detail that fans felt was disappointingly excluded from “The Rise of Skywalker.” In the original script, Kylo Ren is also revealed to have killed Rey’s parents, which led to the spirits of Luke, Obi-Wan and Yoda helping Rey in an epic final battle against Mr. Sith.
Other fascinating facts in the alleged script include that Kylo Ren is chased by Luke’s ghost (a strange twist on Obi-Wan’s ghost mentoring in “A New Hope”) and Rey, “disguised as a Tusken Raider” from the planet Tatooine , “It is revealed to have created his own weapon (a hybrid of double-bladed lightsaber from his cane and Luke’s cracked saber).”
The movie finally ended up in the hands of director J.J. Abrams with a script by Abrams and Chris Terrio, but Trevorrow and Connolly are credited as writers.
Some fans on social networks already consider that filtered depth transcription is superior to the final product, while others wonder what it could have been if the film had adhered to the original vision.
“Even if this is fan fiction, it looks better than TROS [‘Rise of Skywalker’]”A Reddit user wrote.” This is MUCH better than what we got. It’s a shame that some idiots have decided to rewrite it in the disaster it turned into, “another lamented.
However, others felt that the force was weak with the script filtered, making comments like, “this reads like a terrible fan fiction” and “honestly, this only makes me appreciate [‘Rise of Skywalker’] plus.”
This is not the first time that a “Star Wars” script has leaked to the public. In November, Abrams revealed that “The Rise of Skywalker” almost spoiled after the real script was uploaded to eBay thanks to an actor who left the beautiful text in his hotel room. John Boyega, who plays Finn in the current trilogy, then confessed the mistake.
