Gilbert made the announcement on Tuesday's show and was overwhelmed by the excitement explaining his decision to the studio audience, before comforting his tearful partner Sharon Osbourne.

Gilbert explained on the show – which included guests Chelsea Handler and Harry Hamlin – that he plans to spend more time with the family.

He went on to explain that he wants to be able to act and produce more, but his hectic schedule has made it difficult.

After the cancellation of Roseanne, ABC founded the spin-off show The Conners, which sees all his former cast mates resume their roles after the death of his character.
Last month The Conners was renewed for a second season by ABC with Gilbert, John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf who signed new offers.
The three main members of the cast will work hard to make a slightly longer second season with 13 ordered episodes, compared to 11 in season one, Deadline reported.
Gilbert, who plays Darlene Conner, is also executive producer of the series.
