Yesterday, Sony Pictures decided to launch a trailer drenched in blood for MORBIUS that featured a barrage of bats, battles and a shirtless Jared Leto. While Michael Morbius of Leto may be a vampire who drinks blood, Columbia Pictures has a movie that comes out with the word “blood” in the title. Like the main character, the production company launched a new clandestine BLOODSHOT trailer last night starring Vin Diesel.
Bloodshot is not exactly a character with the same brand recognition as Superman or Wonder Woman, so for those of you who are not familiar with the character, here is a brief synopsis of the movie:
After he and his wife are suddenly killed, Marine Ray Garrison (Vin Diesel) reborn by a team of scientists. Improved with nanotechnology, it becomes a superhuman biotechnological killing machine, injected into blood. When Ray trains for the first time with other super soldiers, he struggles to remember something from his previous years. But when his memories come back and he remembers the man who killed him and his wife, he leaves the facility bent on revenge, only to discover that the conspiracy has more than he originally felt.
The trailer itself is very similar to the last one with the resurrection of the Diesel character, allusions to his backstory and training with other super soldiers. Guy Pearce looks promising as Dr. Emil Harting, the main villain of the film. However, the story itself feels very familiar and by numbers. Like many trailers these days, I feel like I’ve seen most of the movie. The trailer has a feeling of SOLDADO UNIVERSAL, a movie that I adore. (Ironically, Bloodshot made its first appearance the same year that UNIVERSAL SOLDIER came out – 1992). Although I don’t think the film is up to the action of Jean-Claude Van Damme, I’m hopeful. At least we could finally see the white skin and the red Bloodshot emblem on his chest!
BLOODSHOT starring Vin Diesel, Guy Pearce, Toby Kebbell and Eiza González makes their way into theaters March 13, 2020.
