Mark Ruffalo It is not alone playing identical twins in the HBO miniseries I know this is true.
He is playing identical twins that look completely different, because they have lived completely different lives for 40 years. Thomas is schizophrenic and has been taking medication for years, while Dominick is not and has not. To play the two men, Ruffalo first filmed all his scenes as Dominick for 15 weeks, and then he took a few weeks and gained 30 pounds, as showrunner Derek Cianfrance He explained on the winter press tour of the TV Critics Association on Wednesday.
“We didn’t want it to be like I ran and put on a wig and did the same scene on the same day, so we took six weeks off to really separate these two boys,” Ruffalo added. “And Thomas is taking medications, mood stabilizers and antipsychotics. A lot of people get fat.”
But those weeks of gaining weight and preparing to play the much more troublesome brother were much more difficult than Ruffalo imagined.
“Those five weeks were really a bit lonely,” Ruffalo said, especially when he began studying what Thomas would have been going through and the life he would have been living with his mental illnesses, including hearing voices in his head.
“Gaining weight for Thomas was really challenging. I didn’t expect it to be,” Ruffalo said. “I thought I was going to have a good time doing that, but when you are feeding forcefully, part of the romance of the food leaves the leaves.”
He also felt the responsibility to honestly represent what Thomas was going through.
“For me, it means a lot to be honest with that, which means going to that world and meeting him and feeling comfortable with him,” Ruffalo said. “And that is challenging, and that aspect was challenging … I was very afraid to interpret it. I think it’s really an important issue, and I want to say it in the most honest way possible. The responsibility lies with me.”
Ruffalo’s fellow avenger Paul Rudd He also recently played two characters on the same television show, in a very different context on Netflix Living with yourself, and although they did not discuss their roles in advance, Ruffalo has nothing but praise for Rudd.
“It’s amazing at that,” he said. “We don’t compare notes, but it’s great at that. It’s great at everything, damn it.”
