Liverpool 2-0 Porto: Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino benefit the Reds Champions League | Football | Sport

LIVERPOOL 2-0 PORTO | KEITA (5), SIGNATURE (26)

The goals of Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino allowed Liverpool to win 2-0 at Porto to give Jurgen Klopp's Champions League team the upper hand.

Liverpool took the lead in the fifth minute with a Keita shot that deflected Porto's midfielder Oliver Torres and defeated the helpless Iker Casillas.

Firmino doubled the lead at 26 & # 39 ;: Jordan Henderson split the Porto defense with a superb pass on Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose low cross was exploited from close range by the Brazilian.

Moussa Marega then had a low saved drive from the legs of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker and the Portuguese team was right to remain in the game in a disjointed second half to give themselves a chance to return home in the return match next week.

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Milner, Fabinho, Henderson, Keita, Salah, Mane, Firmino.

Porto XI: Casillas, Maxi, Felipe, Militão, Alex Telles, Corona, Danilo, Oliver, Otavio, Marega, Soares.

  • Dejan Lovren made his first start in over three months for Liverpool
  • Porto's reinforcement after the injury doubt Alex Telles was overtaken in form
  • Naby Keita opens the scoring in five minutes
  • Roberto Firmino adds a second – Trent assist

LIVERPOOL 2-0 PORTO

FT: done and dusted! Liverpool has one foot firmly in the semifinals after a very comfortable night job. A solid demonstration next week and is a final-four showdown with Manchester United or Barcelona. Tasty!

90: Three minutes added.

88: Not a bargain, folks. I would bet the house (which I don't own) that this will end up 2-0.

85: Woooosh! Mohamed Salah is lucky not to see the red after a long lunge on the Porto Danilo Pereira. I think he made contact with the shin, but neither did the smell of a review of VAR. Strange decision.

81: Marega restrains Lovren before seeing his low shot / cross flash on the target. it was a handful tonight. Fifth attempt actually …

78: Ey up! Just as I write, the Port exploded!

Another research passage for Marega is collected along the left channel. Try to hit from an impossible corner that flies in the side net.

77: Porto is very happy with this 2-0 defeat. And the fact that they have just launched an attack proves it.

74: What a luxury. Jurgen Klopp withdraws Sadio Mane with Divock Origi who replaces him. Good rest before the fight with Chelsea.

71: Sadio Mane wants his name on the report. He embarks on an absurd race on his own before his attack goes off with Casillas without problems.

68: VAR! Dean Lovren falls slightly to the side of a corner, but the referee thinks he may have connected to his arm in the process … NO PENALTY!

65: Here comes Trent! Alexander-Arnold sent the ball back to Mohamed Salah and immediately sent him on to hit the right-back. Felipe does enough to see the danger.

61: Quite a significant drop over time at Anfield with Porto going deeper and deeper. Even Liverpool is not putting pressure on their advantage. Perhaps you save for the big clash between the Premier League and Chelsea on Sunday?

58: Liverpool up to comfort. Nine shots, three on goal, two goals but still need to make sure of that clean sheet.

55: Brilliant moment for the Port, when Corona enters and sends in a shaky area. Lovren is there to make it clear to Marega that he is breathing his neck.

52: Whoops! Alisson and Virgil Van Dijk have fun with the number one of Liverpool hesitant to come and collect a return pass. Few nerves from the Brazilian in recent weeks.

48: GOALFFSSSIDEE! Liverpool thinks they took a third thanks to the warm Sadio Mane. The winger peels behind the defense to convert Jordan Henderson's pass but VAR agrees with the referee's decision.

LIVERPOOL 2-0 PORTO

45: And we're back for more fun and games at Anfield. No change from Jurgen Klopp, who will hope for some other unanswered goals. And you know what? I think he will take them.

LIVERPOOL 2-0 PORTO

HT: Keita and Firmino's goals have control of Liverpool on the counterattack. Porto has taken a couple of chances and tries to have a goal in them – but the defense is frighteningly poor.

40: Porto sent him for a long time in search of Marega, but Lovren lit the burners (they didn't know they existed) to clear up the danger.

37: Jordan Henderson has changed gear in recent weeks. His cameo that changed the game against Southampton proved that he is the key to hopes for the Liverpool title – and he is running the engine room at Anfield tonight.

34: Liverpool seems to score every time they go forward. Porto doesn't seem to have done their homework tonight. It could already be 5-0.

31: Roberto Firmino was directly involved in 12 goals in his 11 Champions League matches at Anfield for Liverpool, with seven goals and five assists.

29: possibility! We had our first VAR check of the evening at Anfield. Alisson points the ball on the TAA's outstretched arm but nothing is given.

The resulting corner is delivered and Marega somehow misses a free header from six yards out!

LIVERPOOL 2-0 PORTO | FIRMINO

26: This will be a very long night for Porto. Liverpool in speed control like Roberto Firmino doubles the command.

Jordan Henderson is the architect when he finds Trent Alexander-Arnold with a great passage. The quarterback pushes him towards Firmino, who converts in style.

2-0 up. I go everywhere. Good night work.

24: Errr … what?! Mohamed Salah has lost an absolute sitter people. Roberto Firmino slips it and the Egyptian tries a nice low end but sends it wide. Half the Liverpool players had started celebrating!

21: Close! Having tracked down to stop a Porto attack, Mohamed Salah finds himself with another head space. His first attempt is blocked and his second attempt is well saved by Casillas. Just a matter of time before the second, folks.

17: Crazy game in London. VAR has already been used with Manchester City who received a penalty for a pink handball. Sergio Aguero's shot was saved by Hugo Lloris.

14: Chance! Mohamed Salah struggles along the right channel before finding Jordan Henderson. His first cross goal is addressed to Roberto Firmino, but Casillas meets.

10: Jurgen Klopp's team doesn't mess around tonight. They seem eager to put him to bed before the replay.

Mane and Firmino are seeing a lot of possession.

7: From the beginning of last season, only Cristiano Ronaldo (24) was directly involved in more goals in the Champions League than Liverpool's Roberto Firmino (20 – 12 goals, 8 assists).

LIVERPOOL 1-0 PORTO | KEITA

5: Did I mention that the visitors had started confident? Well, not like Liverpool goes ahead in five minutes!

Naby Keita scored his first goal for the team against Southampton on Friday … and did it again in a quarter-final of the Champions League!

Keita's effort just outside the area is deflected and beats Casillas.

3: Start confident from visitors – who played most of the match within the Liverpool territory. Telles is already doing a good test with Alexander-Arnold on the left channel.

Shot! Marega connects with a drive about 20 yards but is wide. Hit him pretty hard.

LIVERPOOL 0-0 HARBOR

1: And after a typically thorny version of YNWA – we're going to Anfield, where I expect a dominant Liverpool. 4-0 is my prediction and then I rest for the return leg.

VVD votes for Raheem

19:45: Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk claims to have voted for Manchester City's Raheem Sterling to be named PFA player of the year.

Van Dijk is one of the favorites for the award after helping Liverpool support the Premier League title challenge, while Sterling scored 15 league goals with City, the championship rivals.

"I voted for Raheem Sterling," Van Dijk told reporters. "I did what I thought and thought that if he deserved it, he had a fantastic season, I could also vote for Bernardo Silva and another couple of Manchester City players.

"But I'm just honest, I think he's improved a lot as a player."

PFA rules prohibit players from voting for their teammates.

Ey up!

19:35: I'm sorry to bore you with this – but I've read some interesting transfer news about Liverpool today.

Liverpool is monitoring the Ajax star, David Neres.

This is according to the French publication Le10 Sport, which claims that Jurgen Klopp's team could challenge PSG for its signature.

Neres, who earned his first cap for the Brazilian national team last month, impressed this season – eliminating 11 goals and providing 15 assists in 43 appearances.

Twitter summary

Michael Reid: Klopp again started the same front three. I think it will be the fall of Liverpool at the end of the season: not enough rotation. Why not play Shaqiri?

J Staggs: Liverpool must attack those wide channels against this very narrow side of Porto. It will become a cracker.

Dave: As a Liverpool fan, the most exciting thing for me is that Joe Gomez is back in the subtitles. How vital it could be to run inside

Dave … I don't think it's the most exciting thing about a Champions League quarter-final.

Those rules

19:20: I'm a stickler for rules and regulations, folks. Bad lucky…

All four sides will have the advantage of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) with the system implemented for the direct elimination phases of the Champions League.

In the Champions League the away goal rule is also in effect, which means that Liverpool and Tottenham will have to pay attention to Porto and Manchester City.

Liverpool again looks at the last four

19:15: The finalists defeated last year Liverpool could hope to reach the last four again after being drawn against Porto, a team that beat 5-0 in the last round of the last 16 draw last season.

The priority of the reds could be the Premier League, but the defeat here would represent a great missed opportunity. Porto is also without veteran defender Pepe on Tuesday's match against Anfield.

Living the dream

19:05: Jurgen Klopp says he has been living his long-standing dream of running a Liverpool team that can challenge him for the biggest honors.

"When I was a young manager, I always dreamed of having a team of world-class players with the attitude of a real challenger," Klopp said.

"This is actually what I love, and we have shown it very often, especially in the Champions League. We all know what happens if the boys win something, everything changes.

"But right now we shouldn't think about it: as a club, as a group, with all our supporters we should enjoy the situation because it's so different."

Team news

18:55: Liverpool central defender Dejan Lovren made his first start in more than three months for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals at home against Porto.

The defender replaced Joel Matip, with James Milner replacing Andy Robertson as left-back and captain Jordan Henderson coming in for Georginio Wijnaldum as the third change from the team that defeated Southampton on Friday.

Joe Gomez was named in a team for the first time since breaking his leg in Burnley in December.

Porto received a push after the injury doubt Alex Telles was approved in the form.

The beginning XI …

18:45: No major surprise from Jurgen Klopp, who uses James Milner as a left-back. Joe Gomez makes his return to the team of the day for the first time since December 5th.

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Milner, Fabinho, Henderson, Keita, Salah, Mane, Firmino.

Subtitles: Mignolet, Gomez, Matip, Wijnaldum, Shaqiri, Origi, Sturridge.

Porto XI: Casillas, Maxi, Felipe, Militão, Alex Telles, Corona, Danilo, Oliver, Otavio, Marega, Soares.

Twitter summary

Paul: I am very excited to see the Reds against Porto tonight. Being in CL at this stage of the competition is a privilege and we should not take it for granted !!

Dave: fingers crossed for a classic European evening with a good win.

Jay: make a change for not being us in front of the English opposition in the quarterfinals! I have to be at our best tonight and get a decent first leg result, if possible. The clean sheet could also be crucial!

Vendetta on the menu?

18:40: Apparently not according to the Porto manager, Sergio Conceicao.

Last season the pair met in the first knockout round, but a 5-0 defeat in the Esttadio do Dragao in the first leg meant a goalless draw in the return to Anfield, which led to a & # 39; early exit for the Portuguese team.

As humbling as the defeated one, Conceicao insists that it has been forgotten.

"I heard you constantly ask this question," Liverpool, will it be revenge? I haven't talked about it, you keep asking me, "he said.

"There is no question of revenge, it is a soccer game. All games have a story for them, some different from the others. No single game can change the characteristics of our team. What happened on last year was the last year, the end of the story ".

Seems a bit touchy if you ask me.

The program…

18:35: Well, that's annoying. We have three English teams playing the same night, making it impossible to see them both.

Here we will focus on events at Anfield, but I will keep you updated on events at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium while Manchester City tries to keep their four hopes alive.

I also had some championship action tonight – but I fear you will have to find your solution elsewhere.

Evening…

18:30: Hello everyone and welcome to ours TO LIVE cover of Liverpool vs Porto from Anfield.

The first matches of the Champions League quarter-finals will take place this week and we have FOUR, just, FOUR English teams involved.

This is half. A bit greedy indeed …

The finalists defeated last year Liverpool could hope to reach the last four again after being drawn against Porto, a team that beat 5-0 in the last round of the last 16 draw last season.

In fact, Liverpool have never lost a European match against Porto in six previous matches.

It should be a simple task for Jurgen Klopp's part, right?

LIVERPOOL vs PORTO | TEAM NEWS

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson needs a one-game suspension for the quarter-final of the Champions League, Porto's first visit.

Midfielder James Milner should take over as if Alberto Moreno were the other option of manager Jurgen Klopp, whom the Spaniard has never seen since the beginning of January.

Adam Lallana is a doubt with a slight muscle injury that forced him to lose Friday's victory at Southampton.

Liverpool provisional team: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Milner, Fabinho, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Salah, Firmino, Mane, Mignolet, Lovren, Moreno, Keita, Shaqiri, Origi, Sturridge.
