Yesterday brought us the first preview of MORBIUS, the second installment of the Sony Marvel Universe after VENOM, and the results were … not as bad as I feared? The film stars Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, who is dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder. In a desperate bet, Dr. Morbius tries a radical cure that transforms him into a living vampire, with inhuman abilities and the hunger that it entails.

Jared Leto spoke with IGN after the trailer was released to discuss what attracted him to the character. “Morbius, the man, is a rather complex character. That is what really appealed to me. This is someone who has many conflicts in his life,“Leto said.”He is a guy who was born with this horrible disease and is really a gifted person. When he was young, he was very curious about science and medicine and decided to dedicate his life to finding a cure for the disease he suffers and that others like him also have. But along the way, all hell breaks loose.“Leto added that the battle of Morbius between light and dark, right and wrong, was also a big part of the appeal.
Inside Morbius, there is a person who has a moral code. There is a good person. Ultimately, it is that common struggle between good and evil. And, I guess, we’ll see what ultimately prevails. That’s what I really like about this movie. We are not walking on such a clear path. There is no clear line between what is right and what is wrong. There is a gray area there. And Morbius is an imperfect person. He is not your grandfather’s superhero. He is a deeply complex and imperfect character. And I really loved that aspect that here we are taking someone who is like all of us, who has a lot of challenges and problems.
MORBIUS also seems to push Sony’s Marvel Universe towards a bigger connection with Marvel Cinematic Universe, since the trailer shows us a poster with Spider-Man and an appearance by Michael Keaton, who appears to be repeating his role as SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING by Adrian Toomes, also known as Vulture.
