Winter, pandemic, Internet and oven: baking has especially triumphed during the quarantine months, and Google’s Artificial Intelligence also wants its piece of the cake. Their machine learning model has created two totally new and fascinating recipes for baking.
When we think about the most prolific paths of Artificial Intelligence, prodigious medical advances, spatial conquest, control of smart cities or algorithms of all kinds of apps come to mind. However, machine software can also be applied to more creative purposes such as art or cooking, as a Google machine learning model recently demonstrated.
The most delicious use of AI smells like cake or sponge cake: the multinational technology company revealed in a recent blog post how its team has used machine learning to prepare new recipes, based on the perception that searches for pastries had increased exponentially during the months of November and December.
“We decided to dig a little deeper into the trend and try to understand the science behind what makes cookies crisp, fluffy cakes and fluffy bread with the help of machine learning,” explains Sara Robinson, Google Developer Advocate. What is new is that they used this machine learning model to create two totally new pastry dishes: a cakie (hybrid of cake and biscuit) and a breakie (hybrid of bread and biscuit).

The team focused on cookies, cakes and breads and used a Google Cloud tool called AutoML Tables to build a machine learning model that determined which recipe was for which baked good based on its ingredients. The computer program also identified the hybrids that were cross-sectional in all these recipes.
“We started by collecting hundreds of recipes for cookies, cakes and bread. Then we convert all their ingredients into ounces and we reduce them to some essential ingredients (yeast, flour, sugar, eggs, butter and some other things) ”, they collect in their article.
