Meghan Markle tried to ban the appointment of her five friends interviewed by People magazine in an explosive article last year.
The Duchess of Sussex says calling her friends to court “poses a threat to their emotional and mental well-being”.
In a witness statement submitted as part of the High Court motion, Meghan said, “These five women are not on trial, and neither am I. The publisher of Mail on Sunday is the one on trial.”
Meghan has always denied allowing her friends to defend her from the American magazine, which was interviewed but was not named, and has now asked for their identities not to be revealed.
It precedes a speech Meghan is scheduled to deliver for the Girl Up campaign next week with Michelle Obama and Priyanka Chopra.
