Dog Seen Running Away From Gorilla At San Diego Zoo Reunited Safely With Owner

The totally crazy adventure of a California dog has come to a happy ending.

The dog, whose brief but terrifying stint frolicking inside the San Diego Zoo’s gorilla enclosure made national news, has been reunited with his owner, the San Diego Humane Society said in a statement sent to HuffPost. Previously nicknamed “Mighty Joe Young” as a nod to his great encounter with the apes, the mischievous canine’s real name is Meatball.

Last week, visitors and keepers at the San Diego Zoo were shocked to see that the loose dog had made its way into the gorilla enclosure. Viewers’ video even showed one of the gorillas chasing the dog at a time some feared he might turn ugly.

Fortunately, zoo staff members were able to keep the gorilla away while workers from the San Diego Humane Society recovered the dog. The animal shelter had planned to put him up for adoption if his family couldn’t be found, but Meatball’s owner showed up and claimed him over the weekend.

The organization said that “we are very happy to see him return home!” and noted that the veterinarians cleared him and neutered him upon leaving the shelter. The ordeal has also prompted increased security for Meatball.

“Meatball’s family was able to outfit his yard with a cart system so he can run around and explore without the risk of leaving the house again in the future,” the statement said.
