Posadas presented the first results of the diagnosis on perceptions and practices against dengue

The study, carried out jointly by the Municipality and the National University of Misiones, analyzes how residents perceive the disease and what measures they adopt to prevent it. The data will allow us to strengthen local public health strategies.

Social diagnosis of dengue: a tool to improve prevention

The Municipality of Posadas and the National University of Misiones (UNaM) They presented this Tuesday the preliminary results of the research project “The social representations of dengue and prevention practices in the city of Posadas in relation to the social determinants of health”.

The meeting, held in Municipal Multipurpose Hallbrought together technical teams, researchers and local officials. The work is framed in a cooperation agreement between the Institute of Epidemiology and Health Surveillance of the municipality and the Institute of Social and Human Studies (IESyH-CONICET/UNaM)with the collaboration of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The study aims understand the perception that the Posadeña community has about dengue and the ways in which it adopts preventive practices, considering the social, economic and cultural factors that influence the spread of the disease.

“This project allows us to understand how the community perceives the disease and what practices it adopts to prevent it. What we learn in the territory becomes tools to reach neighbors more effectively,” he explained. Fabricio Tejerinadirector of Epidemiology and Health Surveillance.

More than 15 municipal technicians They participated in the field work together with the IESyH researchers, in an interdisciplinary work that encompasses surveys, interviews and observations in different neighborhoods of Posadas.

Preliminary results: practices, perceptions and access to information

During the presentation, the researchers Agustín Villarreal, Marianela Lindner and Natalia Amerio shared the main findings of the study.

Among the most relevant data, it was indicated that:

  • 44% of those surveyed stated that they had had dengue at some point.
  • And 30% He mentioned not having been vaccinated, mainly for economic reasons.
  • Most people associate dengue with concepts like “mosquito”, “disease”, “prevention” and “fever”although differences are observed according to educational level and access to information.
  • The most used communication channels are television and social mediaalthough a certain persists distrust of unofficial sources.
  • Regarding preventive practices, 70% eliminate containers with stagnant water y 60% use repellentwhile a 25% do not carry out regular hatchery checks.

“Education and communication are pillars of prevention. We have been strengthening the work in the territory, in schools and in institutions. This coordination with the university allows us to design more effective strategies against dengue,” said the Undersecretary of Health and Quality of Life, Matías Orihuela.

The diagnosis is part of a broader plan that seeks strengthen epidemiological surveillance, community training and scientific production applied to public policies.

The project is structured into five axes of action: data collection, educational intervention, training and knowledge transfer, community outreach and shared scientific production. Likewise, it includes joint training between municipal staff and university teams to promote interdisciplinary work.

Institutional articulation and territorial commitment

The activity was developed within the framework of the tenth anniversary of the IESyHand had the participation of authorities from the FHYCS-oneof the Iesyh-UNCEND / oneof the Municipal Epidemiology Institute and of the vector control technical equipment.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment between Municipality of Posadas and the National University of Misiones to apply scientific research to local public policiesespecially in the area of ​​health and the prevention of vector-borne diseases.

In a context of increasing epidemiological risk, the study seeks to generate concrete inputs to optimize prevention campaigns, improve health communication y reduce the impact of dengue in the Posada population.
