Milan‘s Underworld Unveiled: A Theatrical Journey into the City’s Forgotten Roots

A Stage for Milan’s forgotten Stories

The Gerolamo Theater in Milan is set to host a unique theatrical and musical event, Dictionary of Underworld, on May 10th and 11th. This production delves into the popular roots of Milan, exploring the city’s underworld through songs, stories, and chronicles of the Milanese mala. It promises a journey into the collective memory of a Milan often overlooked, presented with a blend of irony, emotion, and cultural insight.

From Idea to Stage: A Labor of Love

The show, conceived by the late Filippo Crivelli, a renowned director with a deep understanding of Milanese and popular culture, has been brought to life by Valentina Ferrari. The performance features Lorenzo Castelluccio, alongside live music by Alessio Lega (guitar and musical direction),Carlo Zerri (piano),and Gianpietro Marazza (accordion),all under the direction of Roberto Recchia.

Valentina Ferrari recounts the genesis of the project:

The show was born from an idea by Filippo Crivelli… on an afternoon when I went to see him almost twenty years ago… He began to give me indications on the pieces that were engaging and then concluded that the show would have been “Dictionary of underworld”… This dictionary is a “Fun”, a game that had given me together with the book.
Valentina Ferrari

Ferrari emphasizes the collaborative spirit and the dedication to preserving Crivelli’s vision. The script, after years of dormancy, found new life thanks to piero Colaprico, another passionate advocate for Milanese culture, who recognized its potential.

Exploring the Milanese Mala: Chronicle, Legend, and Poetry

The Milanese Mala refers to the city’s historical underworld, a subject often romanticized yet deeply intertwined with Milan’s social fabric. This performance aims to explore this complex history, blending factual accounts with legendary tales and poetic interpretations. Similar to how New York City’s history is intertwined with its own underworld stories,Milan’s mala offers a unique lens through which to view the city’s past.

productions like Dictionary of Underworld play a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage. According to a recent study by the Italian Ministry of Culture, theatrical performances focusing on local history have seen a 30% increase in attendance in the past five years, indicating a growing public interest in these narratives.
