SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The San Francisco Giants have removed slugger Rafael Devers from the starting lineup due to a hamstring strain, keeping him out of Friday’s preseason game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dominican, three-time All-Star and 2018 World Series champion, is playing his first full season with the Giants, who acquired him last year in a trade with the Boston Red Sox.
Devers hit 35 home runs and drove in 109 runs last season, playing in 90 games with San Francisco and 73 in Boston. He signed a 10-year, $313.5 million contract in 2023 with the Red Sox.
He was 20 when he made his major league debut in Boston nine seasons ago, and the following year he helped the team win the World Series.
Devers, who has 235 home runs and 747 RBIs in his career, led Boston in runs batted in for five consecutive seasons and has finished in the top 20 in American League Most Valuable Player voting five times.
