Delhi Assembly Election Results: BJP Triumphs Over AAP in North-East Delhi
Story so far: Despite the lingering scars of the 2020 New Delhi riots, five out of the ten constituencies in North-East Delhi have voted for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the recent Delhi Assembly elections. The BJP has emerged victorious in Timarpur, Mustafabad, and has retained their hold on Rohtas Nagar, Ghonda, and Karwal Nagar. On the other hand, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has managed to retain Burari, Seemapuri, Seelampur, Babarpur, and Gokulpur. The BJP’s overwhelming victory secured its grip on power in the national capital for the first time in 26 years, displacing AAP, which had ruled for nearly 12 years.

The Context of North-East Delhi
North-East Delhi is home to a significant population of Muslim and Dalit communities, along with people from Purvanchal and Uttarakhand. The area witnessed violent clashes in February 2020, stemming from protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). These riots saw mobs targeting predominantly Muslim areas, leading to the vandalization of houses, shops, and buses in Karwal Nagar, Gokalpur, Seelampur, and Mustafabad. BJP candidate Kapil Mishra, who advocated alongside a Delhi policeman, contributed to the tense atmosphere before the riots.

BJP’s Wins in North-East Delhi
Timarpur: Surya Prakash Khatri narrowly defeated AAP’s Surinder Pal Singh by just 1168 votes. Congress candidate Lokendra Kalyan Singh, who finished third with 8361 votes, could have tipped the scales further in AAP’s favor.
Rohtas Nagar: Incumbent MLA Jitender Mahajan managed to retain his seat, defeating AAP’s Sarita Singh by 27,902 votes. Mahajan, who has held the seat twice previously in 2013 and 2020, had lost to Sarita Singh by a margin of 7874 votes in 2015.
Mustafabad: BJP incumbent MLA Mohan Singh Bisht, who previously represented Karwal Nagar, decisively defeated AAP’s Adeel Ahmad Khan by 17,578 votes. This constituency saw the highest voter turnout in North-East Delhi at 69%. AAP had substituted their incumbent MLA Haji Yunus with Khan for these elections.
Karwal Nagar: AAP-turned-BJP candidate Kapil Mishra secured victory by defeating AAP’s Manoj Kumar Tyagi by 23,355 votes. By dropping Mohan Singh Bisht, who had been the representative from 1998 to 2015, AAP paid a heavy price. In 2020, Bisht reclaimed the seat from AAP, winning by 8223 votes. Upon his dropping from the BJP ticket, Bisht declared he would run as an independent and predicted BJP losses in multiple constituencies. However, BJP swiftly appointed Bisht as their candidate for Mustafabad, ensuring continuity.

AAP’s Gains in North-East Delhi
Seelampur: Zubair Ahmad, son of the former MLA, emerged victorious against BJP’s Anil Sharma by a margin of 42,477 votes. With a predominantly Muslim population, Seelampur was captured by AAP in 2015, when Mohammad Ishraque defeated BJP by 27,887 votes. In 2020, Abdul Rehman secured the seat with a lead of 37,075 votes.
Seemapuri (SC): Ex-Congress MLA Veer Singh Dhingan, who recently joined AAP, advanced by 10,368 votes over BJP’s KU Rinku. Dhingan has held the seat three times previously, in 1998, 2003, and 2008. AAP’s incumbent MLA Rajendra Pal Gautam resigned in 2022, citing controversy over his comments on Hindu deities and his participation in a Buddhist conversion event. Following his resignation, he briefly joined Congress but did not contest the 2025 elections.
Babarpur: Current minister Gopal Rai retained his seat by defeating BJP’s Anil Kumar Vashisht by 18,994 votes. Rai has been the MLA for Babarpur since 2015.
Gokalpur (SC): Incumbent MLA Surendra Kumar edged out BJP’s Praveen Nimesh by 8082 votes. Kumar switched from the Bahujan Samaj Party to AAP in 2019 and defeated BJP in 2020 with a margin of 19,488 votes.
Burari: MLA Sanjeev Jha, who has held the seat since 2013, emerged victorious against JD(U) candidate Shailendra Kumar by 16,093 votes.
Implications and Future Outlook
The 2025 Delhi Assembly election results reveal a complex political landscape in North-East Delhi, where communal tensions and historical allegiances significantly influenced voter behavior. The BJP’s victory, despite the area’s predominantly Muslim population, highlights a nuanced shift in political dynamics. However, AAP’s strong showing in Seelampur, Seemapuri, Babarpur, Gokalpur, and Burari indicates that the party still enjoys substantial support in the region.
As the BJP prepares to form the new government, addressing the socio-economic and security concerns of North-East Delhi will be crucial. The BJP’s ability to win five out of ten constituencies suggests an increased voter trust, albeit with significant challenges ahead. The upcoming administration will have to navigate communal sensitivities, invest in infrastructure, and restore peace to an area that has seen significant upheaval in recent years.
Conclusion
The election results in North-East Delhi reflect a delicate balance of community sentiments and political strategies. While BJP’s victory marks an important milestone in Delhi’s political history, AAP’s resilience underscores the intricate nature of regional politics in the diverse electorate of North-East Delhi.
