Deadly side effects possible: EU warns of the medication and tightened specifications
There is criticism of a medication that is supposed to help against allergies and sleep disorders. Fatal side effects are possible with Promethazine.
The reason: In several cases, there were serious, sometimes fatal heart problems and psychological reactions – especially when Promethazine was taken together with certain other medication (via: “Pharmacy adhoc”).
What side effects have been found in connection with the drug?
Experts had found information on serious health risks in security reports. Below were:
Promethazin – a medication that does not get along with many means
Promethazine is particularly dangerous for people who also take medication that can also affect the heart; For example, certain remedies for mental illnesses (neuroleptics), antidepressants, strong pain relievers such as methadone or some antibiotics.
In addition, it was found that the injection of Promethazin (for example by syringe) can cause serious tissue damage to the death of tissue.
Because of security concerns: EU intensified warnings
The European drug authority has therefore also tightened the warnings. Doctors should be particularly careful if they prescribe Promethazin and check exactly whether other drugs are involved that increase the risk.
The new warnings are now valid in all EU countries. The aim is to better protect patients and to provide uniform information about the risks across Europe.
