Ditwah Cyclone Latest Update: CHENNAI: After wreaking havoc in Sri Lanka, Cyclone Ditva approaches Tamil Nadu coast. Due to the threat of cyclone, flight services were disrupted in Tamil Nadu and schools were declared closed.

The Central Meteorological Department has warned that the wind moving in the north-northwest direction is likely to strengthen a little more in the sea. 123 people have died and 130 people are missing due to heavy rains and floods in Sri Lanka due to the cyclone. The cyclone left the Lankan coast on Saturday afternoon.

Close to Chennai

The cyclone is now located about 380 km south of Chennai in the southwest Bay of Bengal. It is expected to reach north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts by Sunday morning.

Heavy rains are likely in southern Tamil Nadu and Cauvery delta districts today and tomorrow. It is also predicted that heavy rainfall will occur in various parts of Andhra Pradesh from November 30 to December 3.

Flight services have been canceled and train services have also been altered

54 flights from Chennai airport were canceled on Saturday due to bad weather and strong winds. All schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu have declared holiday on Saturday due to heavy rain warning.

Pondicherry Central University postponed all examinations scheduled for November 29. Rameswaram-bound trains terminated at Mandapam. Buses are arranged to transport passengers. Southern Railway informed that several trains have been canceled or partially cancelled.

Heavy rains are currently forecast in Chennai and nearby districts. Red alert has been declared in Koodallur, Villupuram, Chengalpet, Mayiladuthurai and Delta districts. NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed in 14 districts including Chennai, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur. Fishermen were strictly advised not to go into the sea.
