A story of Resilience: Ines Vasku’s fight Against Multiple Sclerosis and Cancer
In Loosdorf, Austria, Ines Vasku, a 33-year-old author and advocate, is facing a formidable battle. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) at 18 and, more recently, with breast cancer, Ines also contends with an immune deficiency that leaves her vulnerable to infections. Despite these immense challenges, Ines remains determined to maintain her independence and access vital medical care.
The Transportation Hurdle: A Growing Need for Accessible Mobility
As Ines’s condition has progressed, particularly with the increasing impact of MS, regular trips to therapies and doctor’s appointments have become increasingly difficult. While her parents have provided invaluable support, the physical demands of transferring a wheelchair into a standard vehicle are becoming unsustainable. This situation has prompted Ines to launch a crowdfunding campaign to secure a more accessible and reliable mode of transport.
Currently, over 2.8 million people worldwide are affected by MS, according to the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation. The disease, which attacks the central nervous system, can lead to a range of debilitating symptoms, including mobility issues, visual disturbances, and cognitive impairment. For individuals like Ines, maintaining access to medical care is crucial for managing their condition and improving their quality of life.
Crowdfunding for Independence: The Goal of an Adapted Vehicle
The crowdfunding campaign aims to raise funds for a wheelchair-accessible Maxi Caddy, equipped with an automatic transmission. This specialized vehicle would not only provide Ines with a pleasant and safe means of transportation but also allow her mother, who has her own health challenges stemming from past cancer treatment, to drive. The adapted vehicle is estimated to cost around €50,000, and while some financial assistance is available, a significant portion must be covered through donations. The initial fundraising target is set at €35,000.
Without this car, I will soon no longer be able to perceive my therapies and medical treatments, says Vasku, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Overcoming Skepticism: A Community Rallies in Support
Ines acknowledges that some individuals have questioned the legitimacy of her campaign. However, she emphasizes that she is well-known and respected within her community of Loosdorf, and most residents are aware of her genuine need for assistance. The outpouring of support from friends, neighbors, and even strangers has been a source of encouragement during this challenging time.
