Crosstown Buses See Improved Speeds During First Month of NYC Congestion Charge

As President Donald Trump moved to dismantle the congestion pricing plan, recent data and rider feedback paint a different picture. Many of Manhattan’s slower crosstown buses that operate south of 60th Street have experienced notable speed improvements, even if slight, since the tolling program’s inception.

Data Reveals Speed Gains for Many Routes

January peak-hour data reveals that 11 out of 13 local and Select Bus Service routes within the congestion relief zone saw their speeds increase between 1 and 5% compared to the same period in 2024. For many riders, these changes mean a quicker and more efficient commute.

Real-Life Impact on Commuters

One such commuter is Tom Florey, a 53-year-old M50 rider. “There are fewer cars on the road at the time that I travel, it’s a little faster,” he shared. “Granted, my New York is a bit smaller than others probably, but it has helped reduce the time I spend to cross town.”
