SPD general secretary Lars Klingbeil has sharply criticized the crisis management of the North Rhine-Westphalian prime minister and potential Union chancellor candidate Armin Laschet (CDU) in the corona pandemic. “Hardly anyone has caused as much uncertainty among people in this crisis as Armin Laschet,” said Klingbeil to the “Passauer Neue Presse”.
He has repeatedly questioned agreements between the federal and state governments and has advanced in terms of easing. After the Corona outbreak at the Tönnies slaughterhouse, however, he “reacted far too timidly and slowly”.
Laschet had shown in the past few weeks that he did not master crisis management. “And he showed that he is not suitable for chancellor. These shoes are much too big for him.”
The Christian Democrats want to clarify the successor to the outgoing party leader Kramp-Karrenbauer at a party conference at the end of the year. In addition to Armin Laschet, the promising applicants are economic politician Friedrich Merz and foreign politician Norbert Röttgen. Subsequently, the CSU should discuss a common candidate for chancellor.
When asked whether there was still a way to get past Federal Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz as a candidate for SPD chancellor, Klingbeil said: The two party leaders would make a proposal for the chancellor candidate in the next few months. “We are currently concentrating on leading our country out of the crisis. And Angela Merkel and Olaf Scholz’s crisis management is impressive.”
