Cork University Hospital Launches New Helipad: A Vital Step for Emergency Care

Wilton, Cork – Today, Ireland’s Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, officially inaugurated a new helipad at Cork University Hospital, marking the conclusion of a decades-long project. The expanded access to critical medical services via air will bolster the hospital’s ability to handle time-sensitive cases around the clock.

Tribute to Bishopstown GAA

During the ceremony, Martin expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Bishopstown GAA, which had generously allowed the use of its nearby grounds for helicopter landings while the CUH helipad was being developed. This collaboration showcased the club’s dedication to the community and its service to patients.

Helipad’s Role in Medical Innovation

The new facility will deliver a vital service to Cork and surrounding areas by providing aeromedical access toCUH, a major trauma center for the South Trauma Network. “It will provide around the clock aeromedical access to Cork University Hospital as the Major Trauma Centre for the South Trauma Network, for the patients that need the most time-critical care, every day of the year,” Martin remarked.

“This new helipad will deliver a vital service to the people of Cork and across the south of the country, providing access to time-critical specialist care by air,” Martin continued, noting that it was like bringing the hospital to the patient. The quicker response times, Martin said, would result in significantly better outcomes for patients.

Recognition to Health Workers

Prime Minister Martin also took a moment to honor all workers at Cork University Hospital and the larger health service. He expressed sincere appreciation for their extraordinary contributions, noting their efforts over years, and particularly during these challenging times of rising population pressures and ongoing health crises.

Operation of the New Facility

In her speech, Deirdre O’Keeffe, the CUH Acting Chief Executive, highlighted that the helicopter service would commence on a continuous basis “in the coming weeks.” O’Keeffe emphasized the importance of this development, calling the dedicated helipad “a game changer for emergency medical services in the region.”
