The vocal music of Kaija Saariaho, Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement of this edition of the Festival, is based on texts by important authors from different eras who deal with universal themes such as the loneliness of travel, distance, death. The texts are analyzed by the composer as sound materials and as indications and suggestions for listening. The performance of Notes on Light for cello and orchestra inaugurates the Festival at the Teatro La Fenice with the Orchestra itself conducted by Ernest Martinez-Izquierdo.
The orchestral version of Claude Debussy’s Children’s Corner, composed by the Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen, highlights the fundamental relationship between the composers of the second spectral generation and the timbre research carried out by Debussy.
