Community Cleanup Day in Lavis: 47 Volunteers Make a Difference

On Sunday, February 16, the small town of Lavis on the Avisio hosted a significant environmental initiative called the "Clean Up Day." Organized by the Plastic Free association with the support of the Municipal Environmental Office and Asia (a special agency for environmental hygiene), this event brought together a total of 47 dedicated volunteers.

A Collective Effort for a Greener Future

The day’s activities showcased the power of community cooperation. Led by Gloria Pedrolli, the representative of Plastic Free, the event saw active participation from various local associations. Numerous families also joined, taking the opportunity to educate their children about the importance of environmental stewardship.

"Without the collaboration of many local associations, we wouldn’t have achieved these results," explained Gloria Pedrolli. "We’re grateful for the active participation of the Municipal Councillor for Environment, Franco Castellan, who supported us both in organization and during the final coffee break."

Sweeping Across the Town

The cleanup efforts spanned several areas of the town. Volunteers tackled the gardens around the Trento-Malè station, Rosmini street, and the Felti street as well. Another group targeted the underpass in Torbisi, a familiar sight during clean-ups.

Alongside, another team focused on the stretch of Via Nazionale between the two roundabouts, near Sartori’s and Amica Auto. A third group concentrated on the railway station area and the bike track behind the Esso gas station and Amica Auto Carwash. Many motorists leave garbage in these areas, either during their drive or while their vehicles are being serviced.

Measurable Impact of the Clean Up

The Municipal Councillor for Environment, Franco Castellan, played a pivotal role during the clean-up operation, managing the logistics with the town’s cargo van. He highlighted the results of their collective efforts:

"Our volunteers managed to gather roughly 90 kg of waste, including plastic, paper, glass, cigarette stubs, and 260 kg of undifferentiated waste," he said. "It is striking to see a high amount of cigarette stubs left by drivers and in parking areas, as well as light packaging, food waste, and some clothes discarded by drivers lack of respect."

Looking to the Future

The efforts of the volunteers have already highlighted the ongoing battle with pollution, but there is more to come. The Municipality and Plastic Free plan to continue their collaborative efforts.

In Castellan’s words, "We hope to create greater awareness of the environmental and economic damage caused by discarded waste, the impact of plastics on the food chain, and the dangers of light waste polluting our waterways and harming marine life."

This initiative showcases the potential when citizens and municipal officials work together towards a greener and healthier environment.
