Lenten Observances Deepen Faith in Chinese Catholic Communities

A Season of Reflection and Renewal

Across China, Catholic communities are engaging in traditional Lenten practices, marking a period of spiritual growth and planning. This year’s observances are particularly vibrant, wiht activities ranging from pilgrimages and charitable works to vocational testimonies and the vital rite of scrutinies for catechumens preparing for baptism.

Beijing Parish Celebrates Catechumens and Vocations

At the parish of the Miraculous Medal in Beijing, also known as Xutang Church, a significant milestone was reached as thirty catechumens participated in the scrutinies, a ritual of prayer and examination on their journey towards baptism. Parish Priest Don Paolo Feng Pengji emphasized the importance of approaching and following the Lord, resembling him during this sacred time. The catechumens, accompanied by their godparents, received anointing and prayers, signifying their commitment to their faith journey.

Adding to the spiritual richness of the day, two nuns from the diocesan congregation of San Giuseppe, who had recently professed their perpetual vows, shared their vocational stories with the community.Their testimonies offered inspiration and encouragement to those discerning their own paths.

Young parishioners also embarked on a Lenten pilgrimage to the Beijing Diocesan Seminary. this visit included tours of the seminary’s facilities, such as the church, library, classrooms, and refectory. The young people listened to seminarians share their vocational experiences, followed by a collective observance of the Stations of the Cross, deepening their understanding of Christ’s sacrifice.

Confirmation and Party in Shanghai Diocese

The Diocese of Shanghai witnessed a surge in confirmations during the third Sunday of Lent. Bishop Giuseppe Shen Bin administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to 35 adult faithful at the Parish of San Giuseppe di Xinpudong. Additionally, 60 parishioners from the Parish of the Annunciation received Confirmation in anticipation of the Feast of the Annunciation on March 25th, a day commemorating the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary that she would conceive and bear the Son of God.

The Sacrament of Confirmation is a significant step in the Catholic faith,strengthening the recipient’s bond with the Church and empowering them to live out their faith more fully.

These events across China highlight the importance of Lent as a period of intense spiritual focus for Catholic communities. Through prayer, fasting, and acts of charity, believers seek to deepen their relationship with God and prepare for the celebration of Easter.
