The Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Shelter has more than 300 dogs and cats waiting for a second chance. From puppies and kittens to trained adult pets, they all share the same need: to find a safe, permanent home. For this reason, authorities and volunteers call on the community to adopt, foster or support in other ways.
What are the requirements to adopt?
Each of the animals that enters the shelter receives medical attention, is administered a vaccinated, groomed, fed and microchipped. In addition, their behavior with other animals is evaluated to determine the chances of them being adopted.
For those who wish to adopt, identification is required, such as a passport, consular registration or identification card of the country of origin. They also suggest bringing a leash and collar for dogs and/or carriers for cats and small pets.
Additionally, you must obtain a license for adoption in Charlotte Mecklenburg. Animal licenses can be purchased by mail or online through PetData. Also They can be purchased or renewed at the animal shelter.
What is the price to adopt a pet?
Each animal has a different price depending on the type of pet, age and sex. The value includes the adoption tax, spay and neuter fee, license (for some cases), microchip and preventive vaccines.
The regular prices to adopt a pet are:
- Adult dogs: $120 for males and $125 for females.

Other services to help a pet

1. “Staycation” program or vacation for dogs.
This allows you to take one or several dogs for a few days to offer quality time to the pet and a temporary home. Anyone is eligible for this program, regardless of whether they live in another county, and you do not need to make an appointment in advance, just show identification. If you want to keep the pet, you can do so at the shelter or online.
2. “Daycations” program or vacation for one day

3. Take care of the animal, without adopting it, through the “foster” or “housing home”
