Carl Edwards recently took a step away from NASCAR and motorsports, deciding to prioritize his family. Despite his decision, he feels he parted company abruptly and could have handled it better. Surprisingly, the warm welcome from the NASCAR community has been a pleasant surprise, especially following his recent induction into the Class of 2025 Hall of Fame.
After 13 years in the NASCAR Cup Series and an absence of nearly eight years, the veteran has reflected on his emotional reunion. As a runner-up in two seasons of NASCAR history, Edwards shared how meaningful this honor is to him.

“I thought the chance was zero, so I didn’t even consider it a possibility,” Edwards expressed his initial, heartfelt shock upon receiving the news of his NASCAR Hall of Fame induction. Despite his initial disbelief, he was aware of his nomination last year in May. However, he remained humble and continued with his daily routine. His wife hinted to him to check his phone after a flight to Alabama, whereupon he discovered the life-changing honor.
On February 7, Edwards shared his gratitude on the NASCAR Live podcast, emphasizing the emotional significance of this honor:
“Oh my gosh. It means more than I ever could have imagined. You know, as a competitor, you think about this week’s race, but you never really reflect on your career. After being gone for eight years, this honor feels perfectly timed. It’s the biggest honor I could have imagined.”
Since his return, Edwards has made a gradual comeback into the NASCAR scene. His appearances on podcasts and shows are regular occurrences, and last year, he participated in NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers celebration at Darlington Raceway.
“When I got invited back to Darlington, I was truly shocked at the welcome. I didn’t expect such grace and respect from the sport. And the Hall of Fame announcement was overwhelming. Now, I know what it is to be part of the NASCAR family.”
At Darlington, Edwards reconnected with old friends and ex-colleagues, including a heartwarming moment with Dale Earnhardt Jr.
“That evening, I was really nervous about the reception, but when we got introduced, the crowd cheered. I told Dale, ‘Oh my gosh, we miss you!’ It meant the world to me.”
Although he retired at the peak of his career, Edwards maintains no regrets.
“I stepped away because that was what I needed for my life and family. It was the right choice.”
