Capitec Connect vs Afrihost Air Mobile – a strong challenger for data that never expires

Capitec launches mobile virtual network operator Play, Capitec Connect, which competes with Afrihost Air Mobile, FNB Connect and Standard Bank Mobile on data, voice and SMS prices.

MyBroadband compares out-of-bundle rates and data, voice and SMS prices for four mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs).

Capitec launched its MVNO on Monday, September 26, 2022, offering full flat rate for its cellular service, With airtime and data that never expires.

It launched a cellular business with Cell C and promised to disrupt South Africa’s prepaid market.

It differs from other MVNOs in that it charges a flat rate for data, minutes, and SMS, which means there is no need to buy a bundle as its customers will pay the same price no matter what.

Our comparison found that Capitec Connect is significantly cheaper than Afrihost Air Mobile, FNB Connect and Standard Bank Mobile when it comes to out-of-bundle rates.

Capitec Connect charges 4.50 rand for 100MB, while 1GB will cost its customers 45 rand, and with flat data rates, its price per megabyte (MB) is less than 5 cents.

Afrihost has the second-best off-bundle rate among service providers at R0.10 per MB.

FNB Connect came in third with a rate of R0.20 per megabyte.

Standard Bank Mobile is the most expensive at R0.49 per MB.

This trend continues in out-of-bundle SMS prices, with Capitec Connect customers paying half what Afrihost Air Mobile and FNB Connect users pay.

Standard Bank Mobile is the most expensive for standard SMS rates at R0.60 per SMS.

Capitec is also the cheapest among MVNOs when it comes to standard voice calling rates.

Regarding data packages, it is important to note that Capitec Connect does not sell aggregate data allocations. Therefore, we calculated the prices of comparable bundles based on their flat rate of R0.045 per MB.

While Capitec Connect’s flat rate makes its data significantly cheaper on the lower end, Afrihost Air Mobile’s bulk rates for larger bundles quickly become more cost-effective.

Prices for smaller data allocations (50MB to 500MB) for Capitec Connect are the cheapest, ranging from R2.26 to R22.50.

However, from 1GB and above, Afrihost Air Mobile is the cheapest to a certain extent with a 1GB pack costing R30.00, while Capitec Connect, FNB Connect and Standard Bank Mobile are priced at R45.00, R59. 00, and R79.00, respectively.

In addition to being cheaper, Air Mobile’s bundles are valid for 60 days – double that of FNB Connect and Standard Bank Mobile.

On the other hand, Capitec Connect has no expiry date for airtime or data.

For data allocations of 15GB and above, Capitec Connect is significantly priced higher than other products.

It charges R900.00 for 20GB of data, while Afrihost Air Mobile and FNB Connect charge R250.00 and R849.00 respectively.

Standard Bank’s biggest bundle is R299 for 5GB – the most expensive 5GB bundle of the four providers.

Afrihost has recently slashed prices Its 100GB Air Mobile bundles range from R1,000.00 to R475.00, offering great value compared to most non-contract options from major carriers.

It’s worth noting that Afrihost also offers an uncapped monthly Air Mobile contract, but it’s subject to a Fair Usage Policy (FUP).

FNB has also recently Launched a range of LTE bundles Serving individuals and businesses at competitive prices.
