Marshall Rose, Husband of Candice Bergen, Passes Away at 88

The beloved husband of actress Candice Bergen, Marshall Rose, passed away on Saturday, February 15, at the age of 88. His death, following complications from Parkinson’s disease, marked the end of a life dedicated to real estate development, public service, and family.

A Legendary Life in Real Estate and Nonprofit

Rose, who died peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones, was a respected figure in New York’s real estate community. Born in Brighton Beach in 1937, he gained his economics degree from City College and later earned a law degree from New York University. Throughout his career, he oversaw the development of several notable projects, including Frank Gehry’s IAC building and the renovation of Madison Square Garden.

His contributions extended beyond real estate. Rose served on the board of the New York Public Library for 30 years, an institution he held dear. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Rose can be made to support the library’s adult literacy programs across the five boroughs.

A Legacy of Compassion and Community

The obituary speaks of Rose’s commitment to his community and his family, noting that he was “a doting dogfather to his beloved goldendoodle, Jerry.” His legacy is remembered for his “fierce compassion, stubborn persistence, and commitment to cheering on the Knicks.” Many will cherish his wisdom, strength, and generosity of spirit.

A Loving Husband Dedicated to Family

Rose and his wife Candice Bergen marked their 25th wedding anniversary shortly before his passing. Bergen, a beloved actress known for her roles in Murphy Brown and Miss Congeniality, had previously discussed how her marriage takes precedence over her career. “I’m not ambitious,” Bergen said in a 2015 conversation with Sandra Bullock. “I’m grateful when I get offers that engage me for the right amount of time, and I don’t have to leave my husband for more than a week or two. That’s all I ask.”
