Cancer patients on the British Overseas Territory of Jersey now have access to a streamlined system for obtaining essential medications. This initiative reduces wait times and enhances the overall treatment experience for patients.
Streamlining Medication Access Enhances Patient Experience
Health authorities in Jersey have implemented a new system enabling cancer patients to receive prescriptions and obtain necessary medications directly at the point of care. This includes painkillers, antibiotics, anti-nausea tablets, laxatives, and other essential drugs.

Rachael Conway, the Manager of the Oncology Unit, emphasized that the new system significantly reduces the time patients spend in the hospital. “This means less time in the hospital for patients during their treatment,” she stated. “It also alleviates the burden on our pharmacy and medical staff, enabling them to focus on other critical tasks.”
Previous Challenges Addressed by New Initiative
Before the implementation of this system, patients who needed additional medications beyond their primary cancer treatments had to receive prescriptions and wait for the pharmacy to prepare their medications. Often, these waits could extend to several hours.
Sue Letherbarrow, a cancer patient, shared her experience. “Sometimes, we would have a two, three, or even four-hour delay for getting the medication we needed. The new system makes the process much smoother and more convenient,” Sue commented.
