In a series of controlled experiments, researchers recreated urban pollution conditions by burning candles inside a testing room, generating fine particulate matter similar to that found in polluted areas. Participants underwent four sessions where they were exposed to both clean and polluted air through their mouths and noses. Strikingly, the results indicated that cognitive impairment occurred irrespective of the inhalation method.

Four distinct experimental sessions were conducted to ensure accurate results. The particulate matter generated provided an environment similar to polluted urban settings. Results were consistent across multiple trials, showing significant cognitive decline even when participants were exposed to pollutants for as little as one hour.

Mental capabilities analyzed included selective attention, emotional recognition, and working memory. Notably, the study found that selective attention and emotional recognition were severely impacted. However, participants did not experience a notable decline in working memory during the short-term exposure to pollution.
