Tesla sales employees say they get paid peanuts, even when billionaire CEO Elon Musk is willing to reap an unexpected profit from the company’s recent stock boom.
Workers launched an online petition demanding a 15 percent increase in their base salary, saying that recent internal changes in the electric car manufacturer have made it harder to make ends meet.
The increase would bring sales consultants and Tesla vehicle preparation specialists to a “living wage” after the company cut commissions without significantly increasing salaries, according to the petition, which had more than 350 signatures until Thursday by the morning.
“We have been told to be rudimentary while we see our wages decrease, our workload increase and the continuous promises of a better future if we press now,” Dare Brewer, a Tesla consultant in Richmond, Virginia, wrote in the petition . “… The company is doing extremely well with stocks and sales, but the amount we make has decreased.”
Employee demands occur when the price of Tesla shares is around $ 500 after more than double in the last three months. The rally followed the opening of the first Tesla factory in China, an important market for electric vehicles, as well as stronger than expected delivery figures by the end of last year.
Musk, which is already worth around $ 29 billion, can get $ 346 million in stock options acquired once Tesla’s market value reaches $ 100 billion and maintains that level for an average of one month and six months . The market capitalization of the company was almost $ 90 billion on Thursday morning.
Tesla readjusted its sales work in the second half of last year by combining its positions as owner advisor, customer experience specialist and delivery experience specialist, CNBC reported Wednesday. According to reports, that means that sales employees have a much larger list of tasks that includes selling and leasing cars, preparing vehicles for delivery, and selling solar and Tesla energy storage products.
Tesla also cut workers’ commissions and eliminated or restructured the bonuses, but gave the best-performing sales employees and most senior sales employees only small basic salary increases, according to CNBC.
Sales workers care about Tesla as a company, but managers have so far responded to their defense of a better salary by trying to “divide and intimidate them,” according to Brewer.
“We are struggling to bring to life a company that is not doing the same for us,” Brewer wrote in the petition.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Thursday morning.
