100 firefighters – including Southampton crews – fighting in the Ocado department store – Daily Echo

SOUTHAMPTON firefighters were one of the 20 crew members who were trying to tackle a warehouse fire at Andover.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue says that about 100 firefighters were called to tackle the fire at the Ocado distribution center.

Firefighters were called to the Ocado premises at Walworth Business Park after a burst erupted around 2.30 am in some of the food giant's activities.

Crews from Eastleigh, Fordingbridge, Romsey and St Mary's are among the 20 crew members trying to tackle the bles.

General manager of the Allan Carruthers site said that at that time about 120 to 130 people were working, but that everyone had been safely evacuated.

Members of the management team remain on the site while the day team team is sent home while firefighters continue to work on the scene.

Crews of Andover, Whitchurch, Sutton Scotney and Basingstoke have been present since the early morning of today (Tuesday) and further teams from Winchester and Eastleigh have also joined the operation.

Mr. Carruthers added: "They just want 100 percent certainty that everything is safe."
