A British businessman, John Miller, is facing charges of espionage and attempting to illicitly transfer sensitive military technology to China, according to the FBI.

Details of the Alleged Espionage plot

The FBI alleges that JOHN MILLER, 63, was intercepted in phone calls referring to Chinese leader XI JINPING as “The Boss.” the investigation further suggests that MILLER, a resident of KENT, sought to acquire military hardware from the United States for the PEOPLE’S LIBERATION ARMY.

The equipment allegedly targeted for purchase included missile launchers, air defense radars, and Black Hornet “microdrones,” which are designed for close-range reconnaissance. Additionally, MILLER reportedly attempted to procure a secure dialogue device approved by America’s National Security Agency for handling classified facts.

The FBI said MR. MILLER calling XI “The Boss” showed his “awareness that he was acting at the direction and control of the [Chinese] government”.

Court documents indicate that MR. MILLER proposed smuggling the communication device by concealing it inside a food blender for shipment via DHL or Fedex to HONG KONG. The FBI stated that MILLER’s reference to XI JINPING as “The Boss” demonstrated his understanding that he was acting under the direction and control of the Chinese government.

Arrest and Potential Penalties

MR. MILLER was apprehended on April 24 in a sting operation after the individuals he believed to be arms dealers were revealed to be undercover FBI agents. At the time of his arrest, MILLER was in BELGRADE, SERBIA, on a business trip and is currently awaiting extradition to the US. He is accused of conspiring with CUI GUANGHAI, 43, a Chinese national based in the US.If convicted, both men could face up to 40 years in prison.

Neighbors in TUNBRIDGE WELLS, where MILLER owns a £1.5million home, described him as a “respectable family man.”
