Hall 1, dedicated to animals, has proven particularly popular, drawing large crowds eager to witness the demonstrations.
Herding Innovation: Demonstrating the Efficiency of Shepherd Dogs
A captivating demonstration of shepherd dog work drew considerable attention. Within a specially designed enclosure, four Border Collies – Polka, Samba, Volt, and Vauban – showcased their remarkable ability to herd and direct a small flock of sheep. Fabien Pietrini, a breeder, trainer, and herd dog expert from Squiffiec near Guingamp, expertly guided the dogs with whistles and commands.
Pietrini, who has trained around fifty dogs over two decades, emphasizes the growing importance of Border Collies in modern agriculture. Each sound gives a particular order,
he explained, highlighting the intricate communication between handler and dog.
We are trying to develop the activity of the Border Collies on the farms. Breeders always need help to sort, group or pick up their animals. Where we use quads, tractors or even for some of the drones, we want to dismantle the efficiency of the dog in this area.

He cited an example of a poultry farm in Plessala where a single border Collie has replaced a team of six people in managing the flock. This highlights the potential for significant efficiency gains and cost savings through the use of skilled herding dogs.According to a 2024 study by the Agricultural Research service, well-trained herding dogs can reduce labor costs by up to 75% in livestock management.

Pietrini also works with agricultural high schools to promote the use of Border Collies among young farmers, describing them as the formula1 of herd dogs.
This initiative aims to ensure that future generations of farmers recognize the value and potential of these highly intelligent and capable animals.
