Mass Food Poisoning Strikes Bogor’s Free Meal Program

A mass food poisoning incident has impacted hundreds of students participating in the free nutritious meal programs (MBG) in Bogor. Mayor Dedie A. Rachim announced the concerning results of laboratory tests conducted in response to the outbreak.

Contaminated Food Sources Identified

The Bogor City Labkesda’s findings revealed the presence of two harmful bacteria, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella,in food samples collected from the affected schools. These bacteria are known to cause food poisoning symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and fever [[1]].

From the results of the lab examination that we have done about the last 4 days, the results show that some ingredients (food) turned out to contain e.coli and salmonella bacteria.

Specific Menu Items under Scrutiny

The investigation pinpointed barbecue-spiced fried eggs and stir-fried tofu with bean sprouts (toge) as the contaminated dishes. These items were provided by SPPG food provider Bina Insani to 210 students, who afterward exhibited symptoms of food poisoning.

Improper Food Handling Suspected

Further investigation revealed that the barbecue-spiced fried eggs were prepared the night before and served to students the following afternoon. This extended storage period,without proper hygienic practices,is believed to have contributed to the proliferation of the risky bacteria.

Ongoing Investigation and Response

In addition to food samples, water samples and direct examinations of affected individuals are underway, with results pending further analysis. The Bogor City Health Office (Dinkes) is actively investigating the incident,tracing the source back to MBG catering providers [[2]].

Government Urges Thorough review of Food Safety Protocols

Mayor Dedie emphasized the seriousness of the situation and called for a comprehensive evaluation of the Standard Operating procedures (SOP) for food supply to prevent future occurrences. The Bogor City Government is committed to providing medical treatment and support to affected children.

Impact on Students and Schools

Sri Nowo, Head of the Bogor City Health Office, reported that 210 individuals from eight schools experienced poisoning symptoms after consuming MBG meals from the same provider. As of today,34 individuals remain hospitalized,47 are receiving outpatient care,and 129 experienced milder symptoms [[3]].
