DJ GazS Leukemia Diagnosis: A Story of Awareness and Resilience

Unexpected Symptoms Lead to Life-Altering Diagnosis

Gareth Memphis, a 34-year-old DJ known as DJ Gaz, recently received a diagnosis of leukemia after experiencing seemingly minor health issues. What began as unusual gum bleeding and persistent fatigue turned into a life-altering journey of treatment and advocacy. His story underscores the importance of recognizing early warning signs and seeking prompt medical attention.

The Onset: Recognizing the warning Signs

At the end of March, Gaz noticed unusual bleeding from his gums. This symptom, coupled with a growing sense of fatigue, initially seemed like a temporary setback. Though, the bleeding intensified during a weekend visit with his mother in Southport, prompting him to seek professional medical advice.

The bleeding lasted four to six hours.Blood continued to flow from my mouth. It was not painful.I thought of a dental problem, a usual gum bleeding as I brush my teeth too strong, but the color was different, closer to purple.

The unusual color and prolonged duration of the bleeding raised concerns, leading Gaz to schedule an emergency dental appointment. The dentist, after a thorough examination, recommended blood tests, sensing a potential underlying issue.

He looked at me and said, ‘I am sure that everything will be fine, but I advise you to do analyzes.’

Rapid Deterioration and the Leukemia Diagnosis

While awaiting the test results, Gaz’s health rapidly declined. He experienced severe fatigue and physical weakness, culminating in a fall at home. These alarming symptoms prompted an immediate visit to the doctor, where the severity of his condition became apparent.

The doctor recognized the signs of anemia and directed Gaz to the emergency room in Southport. There, he received the diagnosis of leukemia, a type of blood cancer. In Gaz’s case, the leukemia had caused a dangerously low platelet count (thrombocytopenia), with the gum bleeding serving as a critical early indicator.

Treatment and a New Outlook

Following the diagnosis, Gaz underwent immediate blood transfusions to stabilize his condition. Doctors emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that further delay could have led to organ failure. He has sence begun chemotherapy treatment.

Leukemia affects thousands of peopel each year. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 61,090 new cases of leukemia will be diagnosed in the United States in 2024. While the causes of leukemia are not fully understood, it can affect individuals of any age.

Sharing his Journey: Raising Leukemia Awareness

Gaz is now using his platform to raise awareness about leukemia and its symptoms. He has shared his experiences on social media, including a video on Instagram documenting his first blood transfusion and initial symptoms. He also plans to launch a podcast to discuss his daily life and health journey since the diagnosis.

A doctor told me that I may have to take medication for the rest of my life. The mental aspect is the most challenging part, I do not live my life. But I planned lots of things with my podcast, where I will sensitize leukemia.
