PGA Tour’s WM Phoenix Open Faces Player Rebuke Over Unruly Fan Behavior

Billy Horschel, a seasoned PGA Tour golfer, recently voiced his frustration to the tournament director of the WM Phoenix Open, advocating for stricter measures to curb unruly fan behavior. Known for his regular appearances at the PGA Tour’s largest social event since his professional debut in 2009, Horschel has witnessed a decline in the event’s reputation due to increasingly disruptive fan conduct.

Recent Incidents Highlight the Need for Change

Last year alone, Arizona Police made 54 arrests at the WM Phoenix Open, highlighting the significant security challenges the tournament faced. Instances of drunk spectators causing mayhem included a woman falling from the bleachers, a fan sprinting shirtless onto the iconic 16th hole, and even fights breaking out on-site.

Video footage emerged showing spectators engaged in fights and some even urinating on-site. Players themselves were subjected to verbal abuse, with Horschel involved in a particularly heated exchange with a fan. Another professional, Zach Johnson, reported being taunted about the 2023 Ryder Cup, adding to the tournament’s growing list of issues.

Billy Horschel Takes Action

Determined to preserve the event’s integrity, Horschel spoke to tournament director Chance Cozby, expressing the players’ concerns. Horschel emphasized his appreciation for the event but stressed that recent behavior has crossed an unacceptable line.

“I love this event. I love the golf course. I love playing in front of fans. I love a little banter back and forth, and I have no problem with that, but there gets a point where it crosses a line, and it’s crossed the line a little bit the last couple years,” Horschel explained to Golfweek.

“We need to rein it in a little bit,” he added.

Organizers Implement Changes, but Challenges Persist

The WM Phoenix Open, organized by The Thunderbirds, has implemented several measures aimed at addressing the issue, including a new entrance by the 18th green, a digital-only ticketing system, and expanded walkways and venue upgrades. A zero-tolerance policy for unruly behavior has also been introduced.

“The Thunderbirds are a great organization, and I didn’t want them to start getting a black eye for the way the event was being seen from the players’ perspective,” Horschel stated. He further explained his concerns that unchecked behavior might deter players from returning, harming the tournament’s future.

“Fans can think they can just say whatever they want on any hole, but that’s not what the golf tournament is about,” he said. “We just sort of finally said enough is enough, and we expressed our frustration a little bit more.”

Key Players Taking Part in the 2025 WM Phoenix Open

The 2025 WM Phoenix Open kicks off on Thursday, promising a weekend of top-tier golf. Scottie Scheffler, the overwhelming favorite to claim his 14th PGA Tour title, will be among the notable players competing. However, World No.2 Xander Schauffele is still recovering from a rib injury, making his participation uncertain.

Interestingly, Viktor Hovland, who had initially confirmed his participation, withdrew from the tournament last week without providing an official reason, adding an air of mystery to the field.

Call to Action

As the WM Phoenix Open approaches, it remains to be seen how effective the implemented measures will be in restoring order. Fans are encouraged to behave respectfully and enjoy the event within the guidelines set forth by the tournament organizers.
