3 augustus 2020 – Honda saw three of the four cars with their power sources finish in the points at the Grand Prix of Great Britain on Sunday. Technical director Toyoharu Tanabe did not expect this to happen after qualifying.
The qualification did not go as hoped for the Honda-powered teams Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri. Max Verstappen was the only one who qualified for the third part of qualifying, in which he drove third. Pierre Gasly and Alexander Albon narrowly missed Q3 placement, while Daniil Kvyat also stranded in Q2. The expectations for the race on Sunday were therefore not particularly high at Honda, which can nevertheless look back on a successful race. Verstappen came in second after a bizarre closing phase, while Gasly and Albon advanced to positions 7 and 8. Kvyat is the only one of the quartet without a point finish, after crashing hard early in the race.
Honda had not counted on that, Tanabe said after the race. “For Honda, this was the third podium in a row and we also finished with three out of four cars in the points. This is a better result than we could expect after our qualifying performance, so this is an encouraging sign for next weekend . ” This weekend will be raced again and again Silverstone is the place of action. So Honda seems to be confidently working towards the fifth race of 2020.
“Just like in Austria, we now have a few days to prepare for a new race at Silverstone,” Tanabe continues. The goal for that race is clear: the gap with Mercedes should narrow. “All the data we’ve gathered over the past three days will be very useful in preparing for the next game, where the main goal is to close the gap with the team ahead of us.”
