March 2025 Car Sales: A Mixed Bag

The Indonesian automotive market presented a complex picture in march 2025. While wholesale figures (factory to dealer distribution) experienced a slight dip, retail sales (dealer to consumer) demonstrated a notable surge, indicating evolving consumer demand.

The Toyota Avanza followed closely with 5,069 units, and the Daihatsu Sigra secured the third spot with 4,309 units.

The continued popularity of MPVs underscores their suitability for Indonesian families and their versatility in navigating diverse road conditions. These vehicles often offer ample seating, cargo space, and fuel efficiency, making them a practical choice for many consumers.

Electric Vehicle Disruption: Denza Makes a Splash

One of the most notable developments in the March 2025 sales data was the strong performance of Denza, a Chinese brand making inroads into the Indonesian market with its Premium MPV. The electric vehicle (EV) secured the 11th position in the list of top 20 best-selling cars, with a total of 1,587 units sold.

This demonstrates a growing acceptance of EVs among Indonesian consumers, driven by factors such as increasing environmental awareness, government incentives, and the availability of charging infrastructure. While still a relatively small segment, the EV market is poised for significant growth in the coming years. For example, the Indonesian government has set a target of 2 million electric vehicles on the road by 2030, supported by various policies and investments.

Chinese Brands Gain Ground

In addition to Denza, other Chinese brands are also making their presence felt in the Indonesian automotive market. Chery, with its J6 SUV, distributed 987 units in March 2025, securing a place in the top 20 best-selling cars.

The increasing popularity of Chinese brands reflects their competitive pricing, innovative features, and growing reputation for quality.
