Villingen-Schwenningen – A look into the big eyes of pug Hugo Otto (7) melts the heart of mistress Anja Hamiter (50).
The primary school teacher loves her four-legged friend. She always wanted to have a dog, and this dream came true in August 2015. She orders funny Christmas sweaters, carnival outfits and glittering blazers with little hats for her pug in the USA – tailor-made! Anja Hamiter posts the photos Instagram, 15,000 fans follow pug Hugo Otto and his girlfriend Hoshi (8).
The bath lady and her pug are inseparable. “Hugo Otto is a shadow, he follows me everywhere. Even to the toilet, he’s always with you.” Pugs are affectionate and very open, says Hamiter.
But at the age of two, Hugo Otto became seriously ill. “His breathing got worse and worse, he couldn’t keep up with the other dogs. It was very bad,” remembers Anja Hamiter. Hugo Otto’s nostrils were overgrown. An operation was necessary to save his life. Cost: 2000 euros.
A year later the pug got worse again, the second operation! “The soft palate was shortened again,” says his mistress. Hamiter paid more than 5000 euros for surgeries, vet visits and medication.
When a third operation was due, Anja Hamiter gave up her savings account for fear of further, enormous costs. “All that matters is that Hugo Otto is healthy,” she says. Luckily, Hamiter didn’t have to use up the money. The little dog only had one abscessed tooth, the procedure cost 300 euros.
Hamiter, who also wears her Hugo Otto as a tattoo on her upper arm, says: “I would do anything for my dog!”
► The old German pug is the original pug and purebred. The animal has a depressed and short nose, many wrinkles around the eye area
► The retro pug is not purebred (mixed breed), but resembles the old German pug. “Other breeds are bred in here so that the pug gets longer legs and a wider snout so that it can breathe better,” explains Anja Hamiter.
► The VMV pug (Breeders from the Mops Vital association): Purebred pugs that can breathe easily and have long legs are crossed.
