Basketball – Bamberg wins the cup, Alba in the Euroleague – sport

Brose Bamberg started the group stage of the German Basketball Cup with a win. The Franks prevailed in Weißenfels in the duel of the semi-finalists of the preseason against ratiopharm Ulm on Saturday with 74:65 (35:29). Michele Vitali was the best thrower of the Baskets with 15 points, Troy Caupain stood out at Ulm with 14 points. For the opening game of Group C, 500 spectators were allowed in the small town in Saxony-Anhalt.

The Ulm team, who were already active in the European Cup, got off to a better start, but Bamberg fought back and took the lead in the second quarter. The Swiss francs remained decisive and continuously expanded the lead to a maximum of 13 points. Ulm came up again thanks to a good three-way quota, but no longer passed Bamberg. In the second game of the group, the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg and s.Oliver Würzburg will also meet in Weißenfels on Sunday. Game days two and three will then be played in Ulm on October 24th and 25th. The final tournament, for which only the four group winners qualify, is to take place on November 1st and 2nd in Munich.

Master Alba Berlin also wants to be in Munich, but first has to play against the Löwen Braunschweig in Bonn on Sunday. The Berliners are likely to arrive with a lot of self-confidence after they caused a surprise in the Euroleague. The team of the Spanish coach Aito Garcia Reneses, 73, won 93:88 (47:51) at defending champion CSKA Moscow and celebrated their first victory in the fourth game of the European premier class. The Italian Simone Fontecchio was Alba’s most successful thrower with 20 points, while international Johannes Voigtmann only had two points for Moscow.

Before the game, Reneses had feared the next defeat. “CSKA is a great team. Physically they are bigger and stronger than us,” he said of the players of the Russian series champions, who won the EuroLeague title in 2019. In the past season, too, ZSKA was on course for the final four before the corona pandemic was canceled. In front of 3087 spectators in Moscow, it looked like the hosts would win a befitting victory until the break, but Alba improved in the second half. Moscow’s outstanding Americans Mike James (27 points) and Will Clyburn (25) braced themselves against the defeat. But Niels Giffey with an important offensive rebound and his national team colleague Maodo Lo from the free throw line made the decision. Alba welcomes Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz from Spain next Thursday (October 22nd).
