The Toronto Maple Leafs’ season is unlikely to get any better.
Last night they fell again after hot feelings in the last period.
– It’s embarrassing, says the team’s star Auston Matthews, 28.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are last in the Atlantic Division and have had a tougher season.
During the night, they faced the Ottawa Senators but failed to break the negative trend after the Olympic break.
The Leafs suffered their third loss in three games since the break and have also conceded 14 goals in the three games. Afterwards, the team’s star Auston Matthews chose to saw his team properly.
– To be honest, it’s embarrassing. We need to play with more pride and we didn’t have that tonight, says Matthews to TSN.
Seven players expelled at the same time
In the final period, Toronto showed its displeasure. As goaltender Anthony Stolarz got his hands on the puck, Ottawa’s Ridly Greig came and poked him hard with the stick.
It was not popular with the Toronto players, who immediately jumped on Greig, whereupon every other player ended up in the hood of each other. A large brawl broke out in which seven players were sent off with a total of 28 minutes sent off. Toronto’s Max Domi received a match penalty.
“Everyone has to look in the mirror”
Swedish William Nylander scored a goal, but it was hardly any consolation for the Leafs, who fell 5–2.
The club remains last in the Atlantic Division on 63 points, eight points up on the Boston Bruins in the fight for the last wild card spot for the playoffs.
– It’s never fun to lose like this, three games in a row. It is difficult. It definitely wears on one. There is nothing to feel sorry for yourself. Everyone needs to look in the mirror and get better, says Matthews.
The Leafs next play Tuesday night against the Philadelphia Flyers while the Senators play the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night.
