The organization Art Basel has announced the cancellation of its annual fair in Miami Beach, scheduled for the first week of December, as a result of the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. «We announce the cancellation of our December fair in Miami Beach, with deep disappointment and I regret it very much, because we know how crucial it is for our galleries and for the great art community in Miami and for the economy of the city ”, says in a statement Noah Horowitz, director of Art Basel Americas. “We express our gratitude to all who shared with us, during the previous weeks and months, their reflections and perspectives on the situation. We are really looking forward to returning to Miami Beach next year and putting on a great show, ”adds Horowitz.
Art Basel also cites the impact of the pandemic in the south of the state of Florida, one of the most affected areas, in other parts of the United States and in the world, which together with the limitations and uncertainty that the organization of large events entails scale permeated by travel restrictions and global regulations in the context of the pandemic, had to be assessed. «We concluded that there was no other option but to suspend the fair», Indicates the organization.
The Art Basel fair in Miami Beach is considered the largest artistic activity in the world. In its 2019 edition, the organization reported that the fair was visited by some 93,000 people, who enjoyed the works of 4,000 artists from 35 countries, distributed in 290 galleries. That’s not to mention the multiple side events that include fashion shows and parties that attract celebrities from all over the world.
In the statement, the organization reiterates its decision to transfer the approval of participation in the fair from 2020 to 2021 to all the galleries that had already received a confirmation. The same will be done with payments that have already been received. The next edition of Art Basel in Miami Beach will take place December 2-5, 2021.
