a reason for audiophiles to rejoice! The USB-C version of the AirPods Max has received a crucial update, promising the long-awaited lossless audio experience. Lossless Audio Finally Arrives, With a Catch

Apple has rolled out Update 7E101, a replacement for the initially flawed 7E99 version, which aims to fully enable lossless audio capabilities for AirPods Max (USB-C) users. The previous update was quickly retracted due to installation issues, leaving audiophiles in suspense. Now, with the corrected firmware, the AirPods Max are poised to become a serious tool for discerning listeners and audio professionals alike.

The key to unlocking this high-fidelity experience lies in a wired USB-C connection. To enjoy the promised 24-bit/48 kHz lossless audio, users must connect their AirPods max directly to an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Bluetooth is not an option for lossless. Apple touts this as an experience true to artistic intention, enhanced by personalized spatial audio and dynamic head tracking. Music producers can even leverage the ultra-low latency for real-time mixing within logic Pro.

The Update Conundrum: Simplicity vs. Apple’s Way

While the arrival of lossless audio is welcome, the update process itself leaves much to be desired. In a move that some might describe as typically Apple, obtaining the firmware requires a specific set of conditions: the AirPods Max must be charging, positioned near an iOS 18.4 or macOS Sequoia 15.4 device, and connected to Wi-Fi. Even then, the update isn’t guaranteed to install immediately, with users frequently enough left waiting for up to 30 minutes.

This opaque method stands in stark contrast to the manual update options offered by many competitors. Furthermore, users of the older Lightning-port AirPods Max are left out in the cold, as lossless audio remains exclusive to the USB-C model. This decision has sparked debate within the audiophile community, with some questioning apple’s commitment to supporting its existing user base.

Currently, the global headphones market is projected to reach $25.6 billion in 2025,with wireless headphones accounting for a notable portion of this growth. Consumers are increasingly demanding high-quality audio experiences, making features like lossless audio a key differentiator.

Additional Accessories and Tips

Alongside the firmware update, Apple offers a USB-C to 3.5mm jack cable, priced at 45 euros. This accessory allows users to connect their AirPods Max to analog devices, expanding their versatility. However,it does little to alleviate the criticism surrounding the complex update process.

One can only hope that iOS 19 will introduce a dedicated Update button, simplifying the process for all users. In the meantime,Apple advises users to check their firmware version by navigating to Settings > Bluetooth and tapping the info icon next to their AirPods Max.
