“I thank Ambassador Terry Branstad for his more than three years of dedication to the American people as US Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China,” Pompeo said, as reported by Anadolu Agency on Monday (14/9/2020).
“President Donald Trump chose Branstad because his decades of experience dealing with China made him the best person to represent the government and to defend America’s interests and ideals in this important relationship,” he continued. He then praised Branstad’s contribution for being able to re-balance US-China relations so that they were results-oriented, reciprocal and fair. That positive effect, said Pompeo, will persist on US foreign policy in Asia-Pacific for decades to come.
Pompeo did not provide further information on the reasons for Branstad’s resignation or who would be his successor. (Read also: China: US ‘King’ of Cyber Attacks in the World)
Branstad himself was appointed US Ambassador to China in 2016 because he was considered to have good relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping and the appointment was welcomed by Beijing, calling him an old friend of the Chinese people.
